Krittika Nakshatra literally translates to “the cutters”. It is the third Nakshatra and Krittika is also referred to as the better half or wife of “Chandra” or the moon. The personification of Krittika is also represented as the granddaughter of Lord Brahma and the daughter of Daksha and Panchejani.

This quarter of Krittika Nakshatra is ruled by Surya or the Sun God. A person who is a native of this Nakshatra is named beginning with the following syllables:

The location of Krittika Nakshatra or Lunar constellation lies between 26.40 degrees in the Aries sign and 10.00 degrees in the Taurus sign.

Krittika Nakshatra and Lord Kartikeya

In Hindu mythology, Krittika Nakshatra is named after Lord Kartikya who is the son of Lord Shiva. Legend has it that in the olden times, the demons had grown stronger and more powerful than the Gods. They were creating havoc in the world.

The Gods were caught in a troubled situation so they went to Lord Shiva obtained his seed. This was the God’s weapon against the demons but the seed obtained emanated extreme power and fiery energy.

Thus special arrangements were made to store and an ordinary womb was not enough to nourish it. The Gods then approached the Krittikas to nourish the seed of Lord Shiva. There were six Krittikas who nurtured Lord Shiva’s seed.

Lord Shiva’s seed namely:

1. Siva
2. Sambhuti
3. Priti
4. Sannati
5. Anasuya; and
6. Ksama

Kartikkeya was eventually born out of six Krittikas and just on his seventh day of being born he vanquished the demon Taraka. It was also during this incident that Lord Kartikkeya was given the position of the commanders of the Gods.

Agni and Krittika Nakshatra:

One of the most important aspects of Krittika Nakshatra is the influence of Agni or fire. Agni being the presiding deity of Krittika Nakshatra has a major role to play here. Since fire represents the creation of life, the energy and nature of Agni reflects in the personality of the people belonging to the Krittika Nakshatra.
