Krishna Janmashtami is popularly known as Janmashtami that is celebrated around the world by Hindu People every year. This day is considered as the birthday of Lord Krishna the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Hindu festival is celebrated according to the Hindu Luni-solar calendar every year. The day falls on the 8th day of dark fortnight of Bhadrab as per the Hindu calendar. The next Krishna Janmashtami will fall on 11th August 2020, Tuesday.
It is one of the most important festivals among the Vaisnavism people of Hindu religion. During the Lord Krishna Janmashtami, the people do perform different kinds of dances, dramas, melodies, and Kirtans etc. The festival displays it extravaganza during the midnight as it is believed that Lord Krishna took birth in the middle of the night.
The life of the Krishna is exhibited in the different part of the country according to Bhagavat Puran and Rasa Lila.
The festival is particularly celebrated with great splendor in Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this the major Vaishnava people across Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Manipur, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh celebrate the occasion with grandeur.
Most of the Hindus on Janmashtami keep fast, pray together, sing the devotional songs on Krishna, special and vegetarian food is prepared for eating soon after breaking the fast. The people of Hindu origin across the world visit Krishan or Vishnu temple with their families.
Janmashtami in Mumbai
In places like Mumbai and Pune Janmashtami is known as Gokulashtami and there it is celebrated as Dahi Handi, where earthen pot full of Yoghurt is hanged high and people make human pyramids to break it.
Janmashtami in Odisha
In Odisha and West Bengal people keep fast and worship till midnight, they recite Bhagavata Puran from 10th Chapter which is devoted to the life of Krishna. The next day which is called Nanda Utsav, people break their fast and prepare various sweets and food.
Janmashtami in Tamilnadu
In Tamil Nadu people embellish the floor with kolams (embellishing pattern with rice batter). Parsing songs like Geetha Govindam are sung in name of Krishna. Bhagavad Gita is recited and offering like fruits, betel and butter are made to offer Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. On this auspicious day, the male and female kids are dressed up as Krishna and Radha respectively for Krishna Lila. To watch those kids performing is really a delight on Janmashtami.
