Hindu Mythology and Nakshatra
Lord Brahma’s first creation is considered his son Daksha . One of the Prajapati’s, Daksha later had a daughter who he named “Sati”. When Sati grew up to be an adult, she fell in love with the Lord Shiva. Daksha was not pleased with this affair. However, he married off his daughter to Lord Shiva. Daksha was sceptical of Lord Shiva and his status, he was displeased with his daughter and her choice of husband.
In his quest to insult Lord Shiva and his daughter Sari, Daksha held a great “Yagya” but purposely left Sati and Lord Shiva from the invitations. This “Yagya” was a massive initiative undertaken by Daksha with all the Gods and Goddesses present.
Sati came to know of her father’s “Yagya” and she wanted to attend this auspicious occasion with her husband. Sati finally approached Lord Shiva with her request but Lord Shiva refused. She tried to persuade him to accompany her to the “Yagya” but Lord Shiva tried to reason her out of it. Shiva explained to Sati that it wasn’t acceptable to attend the “Yagya” as they were not invited to attend it.
A long discussion ensued but Lord Shiva was adamant with his decision and finally Sati chose to attend the “Yagya” without her husband. Despite Lord Shiva’s reasoning and logic, Sati chose to attend her father’s “Yagya” expecting no harm to come out of it. Finally Lord Shiva had no choice but to let her go attend the “Yagya” without him. However, Lord Shiva sent his trusted followers Nandi along with Sati.
Once Sati reached the “Yagya”, her father saw his opportunity and proceeded to insult Sati and Lord Shiva. Daksya went on to call Lord Shiva Lord Shiva a non-believer in God and a dweller of the dead. Sati was deeply pained by her father’s insults and enraged she cursed Dakshya with Shiva’s wrath. This did not stop Daksya from humiliating her. Sati could no longer bear the embarrassment and she jumps into the fire.
Once Shiva became aware of this incident, his fury and anger was boundless. Siva vowed to destroy the “Yagya” and he went there and extinguished the fire of “Yagya”. Unwiiling to bear the wrath of Lord Shiva, Yagya took the form of a deer and tried to escape into the skies. Lord Shiva pursued “Yagya” and beheaded him. After this the head of “Yagya” was established among the stars, which came to be known as the Mrigashirsha Nakshatra.
This is how it became the symbol of sacrifice and Yagya’s are performed during this Nakshatra as an auspicious period.
