An individual spends quality time in his/her bedroom. Therefore this space in our house is of utmost importance as the overall mental, the physical and financial health of a person is directly related to the energy and vibe they imbibe in this room. To make sure that the utility of a bedroom is amplified to the maximum, Vastu has numerous tips and solutions for a well-arranged and a highly beneficial bedroom..
Shape of the Bedroom
The desired shape of the bedroom is considered to be square or rectangular.
The length to breadth ratio of the bedroom should always be less than two. For instance, if the length of the room is 20 feet then the breadth of the room should be at least 10 feet and not less than that.
Colour of the Bedroom
As the colour has a psychological impact, the bedroom should be equipped with colours that can invite metal peace and happiness. Cream, off white and paler shades of colours such as rose, pink, blue, chocolate, green are suggested according to the Vastu Shastra as suitable colours for the Bedroom.
The ideal placement of Bed in the Bedroom
Perfect place to install the bed is towards the South or West wall, such that, when the person sleeps, the head of the person is towards the South or East and the legs towards the North or West. The cot or bed should be in the Southwest corners of the wall. The centre of the room is best avoided and it is suggested to place the bed in the SW corner of the room. The bed should be placed at least two inches away from the walls.
Placement of Furniture
The dressing table should be placed in the Eastern or Northern direction. Similarly, the study table can be located in the Eastern, Northern or North-East direction while wardrobes are advised to be installed in the North-West or South-West direction in the room. Shelves are placed in the south opening towards north but better avoided in bedrooms.
Mirrors should not directly face the bed.
Position of the Windows and Doors in the Bedroom
The bigger windows in the bedroom should be available in the East or North wall whereas the smaller windows should be in the west wall of the bedroom. This facilitates the entry of the morning sunlight and also accentuates cross ventilation.
East and North walls are perfect for the door/ entrance of the bedroom.
Directions for Sleeping in accordance to Vastu
According to Vastu, the best sleeping position is with your head towards the South whereas it is not recommended to sleep with your head towards the North. Sleeping with the head towards the East and West is also favourable.
Placement of Attached Bathroom
If the bathroom is attached to the bedroom, it should ideally be located in the East or South-East direction, avoiding the South-West or North-East directions. The bathroom should not directly face the bedroom and the door of the bathroom should always be closed.
Advantages of a Vastu Compliant Bedroom and Disadvantages of a Vastu Non-Compliant Bedroom
- Placing the bedroom in the direction as per Vastu brings good health, longevity and prosperity.
- Sleeping with the head placed in the direction as suggested by Vastu imbibes positive vibration.
- Sleeping with head towards the South improves the quality of sleep, increases wealth and happiness. Whereas sleeping with the legs towards the South will interfere with sound sleep, will cause bad dreams, stress, bad thoughts, mental sickness and heaviness in the chest. The South is considered to be Lord Yama’s place (the Lord of Death) hence increasing the chances of lessening of life span.
- Sleeping with head towards the west attracts good name, fame, reputation and prosperity.
- Sleeping with head towards the east will increase the inclination towards spiritualism, increases memory, concentration and mental harmony. This position is especially recommended for students as it is said to increase the retention power of the brain.
- Sleeping with head towards the north will however have adverse effects like a major illness and sleep deprivation. However sleeping with the legs in this direction invites prosperity and opulence.
- If the mirror is placed directly facing the bed, it is believed that the body part which is reflected continuously in the mirror is said to develop medical complication.
- Any bedroom placed in the South-East direction of the building will invite petty quarrels between couples and unnecessary expenditure.
- No bed room should be located in the North-East direction as this is supposedly the place meant for deities, therefore increasing the possibility of mishaps and sickness in the family.
- Married couples sleeping in bedrooms placed in the North-East direction might have to face long term illness.
- Head of the family or senior member of the house sleeping in the bedroom occupying the North-East corner may negatively affect their health and finances.
- People sleeping in the South-East /Agneya direction in an East side bedroom are prone to suffer from insomnia and anxiety attacks. In the long run they could also throw temper tantrums.
- If the bedroom is facing towards the North-West/ Wayavya, the people sleeping in this bedroom are susceptible to weak finances in their work leading to migraines and other ailments.
The Do’s and Don’ts:
It is advantageous to place a “bagua” (a mirror meant to reflect negative energy) outside the bedroom.
Do not place your beds under beams or slanted ceilings. The solution for this is to cover it with false ceilings.
Avoid television, computers, laptops, heaters or such electrical appliances in the bedroom as best as possible. If you do keep them, place them in the South-East direction. Electrical appliances cause harmful electromagnetic radiation.
Do not store things under the beds.
It is important to de-clutter regularly because our brains are programmed to like order, therefore a constant vision of clutter can interfere with our cognitive abilities.
White and yellow coloured marble stones are advised not to be used specially in a newly married couple’s bedroom.
Avoid plants, aquariums and other forms of life inside the bedroom
Beautiful paintings or portraits should be hung on the walls of the bedrooms in such a way that they are directly visible as one enters the bedroom.
Bedrooms in the South-East direction can be utilized as an office.
Master Bedroom
As per Vastu, married couples should use the master bedroom. Placing the master bedroom in the South-West direction makes it Vastu compliant thereby attracting the benefits that it has to offer.
In case of multi-storeyed houses, the Master Bedroom should always be placed on the top floor avoiding the middle floor. The master bedroom should always be bigger in size than all the other rooms in the house.
Bedroom for Children
Children’s bedroom is best located in the East or the West direction according to Vastu. The logic being that the bedrooms in the east are well lit in the mornings thereby facilitating their morning studies. Likewise it is believed that the West facing rooms are warm and bright in the evenings due to the setting rays of the sun in the West thus beneficial to the children for their evening studies.
Bedroom for Guests
The correct location of the bedroom for guests should be in the North-West.
