Humans as Social Animals
A living room is symbolic of the fact that we are social animals. We use this room to entertain our guests and socialize with them. A well-organized Vastu for living room can enhance energy and positive vibes among the family members, friends and guests while drinking, watching television or just partaking in conversation with our guests.
Not just to socialize, this room is also used for our individual leisure time. Members of the family also use this room for relaxation. Hence we can say that the living room has a dual purpose. A Vastu compliant living room attracts wealth, prosperity and the well being of all the family members.
Living room Vastu and why it is Important?
A living room is the area which is usually occupied by our guests. Hence, we never know what energy and vibe an outsider may bring inside our homes. If a single guest brings about negative energy with them, this could adversely affect our homes.
The negative energy emitted by a guest, dissipates in the living room. If our living room is not Vastu equipped, it absorbs this energy and all the negative vibes get reflected, making it more potent and disastrous.
A non Vastu compliant living room and home further spreads this negative energy throughout the residents, eventually affecting the residents of the house. This will have a negative impact on the family members, thereby, disrupting their peace of mind and adversely affecting an individual’s emotional, physical and financial well being. Fortunately, we have Vastu Shastra to fully equip our living rooms and protect our homes from such repercussions.
Listed below are the measures we can take to make our living room Vastu friendly and ensure ourselves a healthy and prosperous life:
- Ideal location for the living room: Vastu states that ideally a living room should be in the east or in the north direction. For families wishing to avoid late night parties, a living room in the north-west is favourable. The north-west direction relates to “Vayu” or wind energy symbolizing restlessness and therefore emits a restless energy among the guests prompting them to leave early.
Implications of a Living Room in the south-west zone
Vastu has further mentioned that it is unfavourable to construct a living room in the south-west. South-west direction relates to “Prithvi” or the Earth, a living room in this direction encourages the guests to stay over for a longer period of time.
- Decors and their placement in a Vastu compliant living room: According to Vastu, the floor of the living room should always slope towards the east or north direction. All the furniture, showcases and the cupboards should be in the west, south or the south-west direction of the living room. The head of the house should always be facing the east or the north direction.
Television:
People usually place their television set in the living room but it is important that we install it in the south-east corner of the room.
Frames and pictures:
Vastu discourages hanging of pictures or artworks of weapons or wild animals as they are believed to emit negative energy. Vastu however encourages pictures reflecting positive energy to be hung on the walls of the living room. These include pictures of Gods and Goddesses, waterfalls or enlightened beings. One should also make sure to hang them in the north-east wall of the living room.
Fountains and Fish Water Tanks:
Vastu also specifies that it is highly beneficial to keep a water fountain or a fish tank in the north-east corner of the living room.
Correct selection of Flowers and Plants
Vastu also encourages the placing of flowers in the living room, as they emit positive energy. However, one should not place fake flowers in the living room. Real plants such as the Chinese bamboo plant are considered extremely lucky. Money plants are beneficial, but it should be kept in water to attract prosperity and wealth. Vastu also states, that it is necessary to replace dying flowers with fresh ones, regularly.
- Ideal “Puja” area in the living room: Incase of a “puja” room attatched to the living room, it is always preferred to align the puja space in the north-east corner of the living room.
- Vastu compliant shades for the living room: Vastu suggests light and tranquil shades for the living room. Colours such as white, light yellow, green and sky blue bring positive and a calm vibe in the living room area.
- Dimensions of the furniture in a living room: Vastu has specified that the furniture in the living room should never be of any odd shapes. Shapes such as circular, triangular or hexagonal are said to attract confusion and chaos. Hence, the ideal shapes according to Vastu are squares and rectangles.
- Different locations of the door in the living room: In a Vastu compliant living room, the ideal location for the door is in the east or north direction, as it is considered very auspicious.
The door of the living room, if it is in the south, north-east or south-east directions, symbolises hard work and success. A living room door located in the west is highly beneficial for scholars and researchers. A north-west located door ensures development in all areas of life.
However, Vastu Shastra prohibits the location of the door in the southern direction. If the door is already built here it is advised to be moved to the western direction.
Do’s and Don’ts in a Vastu compliant Living Room
- The telephones in the living room should always be kept in the east, south-east or northern corner. The telephone should never be placed in the south-west or the north-west corner.
- Air coolers and conditioners should be installed in the west, north-west or east directions. One should refrain from placing these appliances in the south-east direction.
- Colours such as black and red should never be used for painting the living room walls.
- If there is a staircase, it should be constructed in the west, south-west direction of the living room area.
- In the living room, the light curtains should be hung in the north-east windows and the heavy curtains should be hung in the south-west windows.
- The chandeliers should always be hung in the south or the west ceilings of the living room. The centre of the living room is best kept devoid of any hangings and decor.
- If there is any Vastu defect in the north-west corner of the living room then it can be corrected by keeping a fish tank or an aquarium.
- One should never keep the aquarium in the south direction, as it will flush out all the positive energy of the house.

A clean, Vastu compliant living room, is an absolute essential, not just for the harmonious relationship between the guest and the host, but, it also has a positive effect on the overall well being of the entire family.
